Welcome!

Hi!

Thank you for taking the time to visit our temporary blog. We are working around the clock to get our website  up and running. In the mean time we have created this blog to keep you up to date with our progress in erecting Canada's First National Holocaust Monument.
Once we have our website up and running, a main component of the project will be accessible: the letter of support. We need you to sign your name to this letter, to show the National Capital Commission that this is an important monument, which has the Canadian people's support. Please either send a private note to this live journal account with your name, city, and province, or check back frequently to see if the website is completed.

Thank you once again]

Canada’s first Holocaust Monument

Our goal is to create Canada’s first National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa. The purpose of the monument will be to commemorate the men, women and children who were innocent victims during the Holocaust. This monument will recognize and remember the impact that the Holocaust had, and continues to have on all Canadians.

We seek the collaboration of all Canadians in the creation of this monument; which will serve as an everlasting reminder of our collective history.

How will we accomplish our mission?

The team has begun a national survey that will look at what Canadians want in the national Holocaust Monument (style, location, symbols...).  The survey will also be partnered with school and community educational programs.  The results of the survey will be used as guidelines for designers in a national competition.  The selection will be made by an executive comprising of community organization and community leaders.  Once a selection has been made fundraising will commence, followed by building and completion.

Why a Holocaust Monument

This is a deeply personal project.  It was founded by three Jer’s Vision youth board members who learned the personal affect the Holocaust had on individuals, and how their stories are being lost to time.  The team also was dismayed when they saw the lack of Canadian commitment to preserving the memory of survivors and those murdered in the Holocaust.

It is important that we as a nation commit to remembering Canada’s imperfect past and learning from it, so that we (and future generations) may truly ensure that this Never Happens Again.

But aren’t there other monuments?

No, there is no current National Holocaust Monument.  Yes, other initiatives exist, however these are linked to specific communities, are private project or services particular regions.  This would be the first national project, representing all of Canadians and our national commitment to remember the Holocaust and its victims.
